The Oklahoma Wesleyan men’s basketball team kept playing with fire and eventually got burned in the championship game of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament on Monday night in Park City, Kansas.

For the third time this year, Bethel beat OKWU 73-72.

The Eagles had won two one-point games in the tournament prior to last night.

It was two Thresher free-throws with less than a second remaining that gave the regular season conference champs the tournament title, as well.

The possession before the Thresher-winner, Wesleyan was down by two with the basketball after two Bethel turnovers gave OKWU life. Brooks Haddock made a dazzling three-pointer, which gave Oklahoma Wesleyan a lead with just over four seconds left in regulation.

However, Bethel would push the ball down the floor and draw a foul with .9 seconds remaining on the ensuing possession. Down one, the Threshers made two free-throws to win it. Jansen Lietzke led OKWU with 15 points. The Eagles shot just 34.3 percent from the field.

Up next, the NAIA National Tournament for the Eagles, who are guaranteed a spot.

They will find out their seed and placement on Thursday, before games begin on March 12.

OKWU will play its first two round games in Wichita.
