The Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball teams continue to thrive late in the season after another sweep of a conference doubleheader against Southwestern.

The women’s game got off to a disastrous start with the Lady Eagles falling behind 27-7 after the first ten minutes of play. However, OKWU wouldn’t let the big deficit deter them as they slowly began gaining ground on Southwestern.

The Lady Eagles made a big comeback push in the second quarter as they outscored the Moundbuilders 24-11 to cut the halftime deficit to seven points. OKWU ran with that momentum into the third quarter and took the lead for the first time midway through the period and would never look back.

Four Lady Eagles scored double-figures in the win. Senior Sarah Short led the charge with a career-high 17 points. OKWU is now 18-8 on the year.

On the men’s side a highly-touted contest lived up to expectations and then some. The No. 21 ranked Eagles went blow-for-blow with sixth-ranked Southwestern and came away with an 88-85 win.

The Moundbuilders held a nine-point lead midway through the first half but that would be the biggest lead for either side in the game. Southwestern took a six-point lead on buzzer beater to head in to halftime at 42-36.

The game would stay within two possessions for the entire second half in an epic battle. Junior guard K.J. Malveau had just six points in the first half but he caught fire from the outside in the second half. Malveau had five three-pointers in the half and seven on the game.

With the game tied at 83 in the final minute Malveau unleashed a contested heave to put the Eagles ahead.

Malveau finished with a game-high 25 points. Not far behind was Joshua Wilchcombe who had 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks in the win.

The OKWU men are now 19-8 on the season. They find themselves two games behind first-place Southwestern with four games remaining in the regular season.
