Friday is a monumental day for Oklahoma Union basketball as the fifth-ranked Cougars Boys’ team has opportunity to punch its ticket to het state tournament. The Cougars square off with Okemah in area finals at Checotah High School. A win for OKU means a trip to its first state tournament since 2005. A loss would send the Cougars to area consolation bracket finals.

The Cougars made light work of the Nowata regional last weekend. OKU defeated Ketchum and Rejoice Christian. The Cougars were challenged a bit more than they were in the regular season as they won by margins of 12 and 14 points respectively. OKU head coach Lee Ott says Okemah will offer a bigger challenge for his team.

Okemah is 20-6 on the season. Four of those losses have been to higher classification teams. The thirteenth-ranked Panthers have knocked off Wewoka, Warner and, ninth-ranked Regent Prep so far in the postseason. Okemah has scored at least 75 points in five of its last six games. Ott says he expects to see an up-tempo basketball game.

The Cougars have won 18 straight contests since dropping their lone game of the season to 4A No. 4 Mannford on December 7. Tipoff from Checotah is set for 8 p.m. Radio coverage can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM starting at 7:45 p.m.
