The fifth-ranked Oklahoma Union boys’ team is just one win away from a state tournament bid after defeating No. 10 Nowata 66-44 in the regional title game from Hulbert on Saturday. This is the third time the Cougars have defeated Nowata this season.

The game started off close in the early goings. OKU led 16-12 after one quarter of play. Nowata showed strong in the second quarter as it tied the game at 22 with four minutes left. Ironmen senior guard Gabe Velasco tied the game on this long ball.

What was a close game to that point would quickly break the Cougars way. Kade Hollingshed was the first OKU player to reach 10 points. However, older brother Jace would soon catch up. This fastbreak three from the elder Hollingshed would contribute to a 15-2 run for the Cougars before halftime.

OKU would cruise through the second half for its third straight postseason win by more than 20 points. The Hollingshed brothers would combine for 39 points on the night. Jace Thompson led Nowata with 14 points.

OKU will play No. 1 Dale in the area finals on Friday night at 8 p.m. from Fort Gibson. Nowata will head to the consolation bracket to play Chouteau at 8 p.m. on Thursday night.
