No. 5 Oklahoma Union suffered a shocking loss on Friday night. The Cougars fell to Okemah in the area final, 69-49. The Panthers outscored OKU 19-9 in third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Things looked good for the Cougars out of the gate as they scored the first seven point of the game. Okemah didn’t score in the first three minutes. However, the Panthers would close the quarter on a 16-4 run. Okemah pulled its lead to 13 points midway through the second quarter.

The Cougars would scrap back to reduce the deficit to six by halftime at 34-28. This layup from Kade Hollingshead aided Oklahoma Union’s second quarter comeback.

OKU was just outmatched in the second half. This is the Cougars’ first loss since December 7, which snaps an eighteen-game winning streak. Kohlsyn Gibson and Nate Collier each scored 10 points in the loss.

OKU will have another chance to earn a bid to the state tournament on Saturday with a rematch against Rejoice Christian in the area consolation finals. The Cougars defeated Rejoice, 64-52, in the Nowata regional finals on Feb. 23. Radio coverage from Checotah High School can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM starting at 8 p.m.

The Lady Cougars will also play for a state tournament bid on Saturday. OKU defeated Central Salisaw 51-44 to stay alive in the consolation bracket. The Lady Cougars play Chouteau at 6:30 p.m.
