Nowata Starts District Play at Kansas

The Nowata Ironmen continue a quest for the team’s first victory since the end of the 2016 season. Nowata takes an 0-3 record on the road to Kansas, Oklahoma for its opener in 2A District 4 play.

The Ironmen have scored one touchdown in each of their non-district games—all convincing losses. However, the Nowata offense should see a jolt with the return of senior quarterback Skylar Thornton who missed the first three games of the season due to injury. Thornton had 10 touchdown passes in his 10 starts last season, nine of those came in the final four games of the regular season.

A beefed up passing game will help, but Ironmen head coach Bob Craig knows it will take an all-around effort to get in the win column.

Nowata will face a squad they are unfamiliar with in Kansas. The Comets are 2-1 on the season with wins over Westville and Ketchum. They will feature a traditional under center offense with a heavy emphasis on the run game.

The Comets physical brand of football could create a challenge for the Ironmen according to Craig.

The Ironmen and Comets kickoff Friday at 7 p.m. Coverage can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m.
