Nowata Plays Better, but Falls at OKU

There are signs that the 2019 version of the Nowata Ironmen football team will exceed expectations, but there wasn't quite enough to get NHS over the hump in its first game of the season.

Oklahoma Union outlasted a scrappy Nowata effort, as the Cougars topped the Ironmen 26-12 in the first game of the season for the two Nowata Co. clubs.

Back-to-back fourth quarter touchdowns for Oklahoma Union put the nail in the coffin, as the game was tied entering the final quarter of play.

Despite the loss, Nowata had early leads, as Dillon Barnes and Jace McKisson both scored on rushing TDs to give the Ironmen 6-0 and 12-6 advantages.

Oklahoma Union would hang early around thanks to QB Mason Siegle, who had three rushing touchdowns, and unofficially, 110 yards on the ground. Seigle is in his second season starting for OKU's Stephen Trammell. He led the Cougars to a playoff appearance last season.

Nowata (0-1) will face yet another area team this coming Friday, as Dewey will visit to play for the Adam Hooper Trophy. That game will be broadcasted live on KRIG 104.9 FM.

Oklahoma Union will have an area battle next, as well. Someone will pick up their first loss of the season, as Pawhuska hosts the Cougars. That game will air on 99.1 FM - KPGM.
