Nowata Hosts Dewey in Rivalry Bout

One of the greatest area rivalries will be renewed on Friday as Nowata hosts Dewey for a hardcourt battle. The Doggers won both matchups last season. Dewey blitzed the Ironmen at Ty Hewitt Court in an 86-74 win in which Dewey hit 18 three-pointers.

Both teams have new blood this season. The Doggers opened the season on Thursday with a 66-59 loss to Coffeyville. While Nowata is 1-1 after losing to Barnsdall and blowing out Hominy on Tuesday.

Dewey will rely on junior’s Hayden Thornton and Colby Henley to lead a team that is coming off a conference championship a year ago. Doggers head coach Lance Knight says their ability to play bigger than they are makes them special.

In Nowata it’s a changing of the guard as the eight top scorers are gone from last year’s team that made it to the area finals. Mark Price showed his potential on Tuesday with a 22-point performance in the win over Hominy. Nowata head coach Gary Hollingshead says this young Ironmen team will rely on playing scrappy defense.

Tipoff at 8 p.m. from Ty Hewitt Court in Nowata. Radio coverage can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM.
