Nowata Faces Challenge at Vinita

The Nowata Ironmen will play the final of three straight rivalry games to begin the 2019 season on Friday. The ‘Highway 60 Rivalry’ will be renewed as Nowata travels to Vinita hoping for a different result against an 0-1 Hornets team. The Ironmen have already lost contests to Oklahoma Union and Dewey so far.

Take away a few coverage lapses and head coach Chris Messner thinks the Nowata defense fared well against the Bulldoggers. Messner says he has been impressed by that unit.

Defensive coordinator Gary Hollingshead previously spent time as a coach at Vinita. One of the anchors of his unit has been senior lineman Dayne Bowlin, a three-year starter for the Ironmen. While the team has struggled in his time, Bowlin says he has grown as a person through playing for Nowata.

Last year, Vinita beat Nowata, 58-6. The Ironmen will look to win their first non-district game since 2016. Nowata plays at Vinita on Friday at 7 pm. You can listen on KRIG 104.9 FM with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 p.m.
