Linebackers Leading Improved Nowata Defense

The 2018 Nowata Ironmen hope to turn the page on a tumultuous winless season a year ago. Nowata is hoping to build the program’s status back up to the 2A powerhouse that it used to be. Just a few years ago in 2014, Nowata fell a touchdown short in the state title game against Davis.

Bob Craig enters his first full year with the program after taking over after week two in 2017. Craig has added a couple of assistant coaches to his staff but player depth remains a looming issue with just 23 players on roster ahead of Friday’s opener at Dewey.

The Ironmen padded their preseason with two separate scrimmages and saw plenty of progress made especially on the defensive side of the ball. Craig is very happy with the production he’s gotten from linebackers Dillon Barnes and Josiah Clark thus far.

Both players enter their junior seasons with 10 games of playing experience already. Craig hopes contributions from these two as well as others can lead to improvement from a defense that gave up 40+ points six times a season ago.

The Ironmen travel to Dewey Friday for the second annual ‘Battle for the Adam Hooper Trophy’. Dewey won last year’s meeting 63-0.

We’ll have much more on this matchup as the week continues
