Ironmen, Cougars renew 'The Battle for Nowata County'

The most high-spirited game of this opening week features two inter-county rivals as Oklahoma Union hosts Nowata. The teams renewed a longstanding rivalry that was not played last year after OKU dropped down to Class A.

These squads find themselves at different places. The Cougars are coming off a 5-6 campaign that saw them in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. OKU returns its starting quarterback Mason Seigel as well. Second-year head coach Stephen Trammell says this year is all about building last year’s success.

The Ironmen will be introducing new head coach Chris Messner who served as an assistant last season. Nowata has improved numbers from a year ago but will have a lot of youth on the field come Friday night. Messner says turning the program around starts with consistency.

Senior Dillon Barnes will be an impact player on both sides of the ball playing fullback and defensive end. The Ironmen have just one win in the last two seasons.

The Cougars won the last meeting between the teams in 2017, 60-22. You can listen to ‘The Battle for Nowata County’ on KRIG 104.9 FM. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m.
