Nowata High School announced the hiring of a new boys’ basketball coach on Tuesday afternoon. Nate Smith will lead the illustrious Ironmen boys’ team. Smith was hired at the most recent school board meeting and NPS made the move official through its social media platforms.

Smith spent the last two seasons at Porter High School going 17-27. In the 2020-21 season the Pirates went 12-8 and took home a district title for the first time in eight years. He also coached the Bixby boys’ teams from 2017 to 2019 going 10-37 over two seasons. Nowata athletic director and principal Bron Williams says Smith will be a great fit in Nowata.

Smith also served a stint on the staff at Owasso High School as an assistant. Prior to that he coached Elkins HS in Arkansas for nine years.

Smith takes over for Gary Hollingshed, the school’s all-time winningest coach who left to take the Stigler High Girl’s job after eight seasons in Nowata. The new coach was able to meet with the players this week for the first time.

We will have more on Nowata’s new basketball coach later thisweek.
