Ironmen Ready for Challenge Against No. 6 Beggs

It was nearly a month ago that the Nowata Ironmen clinched a spot in the 2019 2A playoffs. It was October 17 when the Ironmen went on the road to beat Chouteau to put the team in the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Nowata saw itself in a dismal two-season run going 1-19 in 2017 and 2018.

An assistant last year, Chris Messner was promoted to head coach and brought in a youthful and energetic staff to change the culture. Messner says the turnaround starts with the kids.

After clinching the playoff spot in week 7, the Ironmen went 1-2 down the stretch to finish at 5-5 overall. Last week’s 41-26 win over Wyandotte secured the Ironmen the No. 3 spot out of 2A District 4. The Ironmen used a dominant ground game to carry them through the season. The senior trio of Dillon Barnes, Josiah Clark and Jace McKisson combined for nearly 1,500 yards and 24 touchdowns in the regular season.

All that being said, Nowata will likely be sizable underdogs against Beggs, the 2018 state runner-up. The Golden Demons went 8-2 on the year, only losing to Shiloh Christian and No. 1 Sperry in the regular season.

Much more on this matchup later in the week. You can hear Nowata at Beggs on the radio on KRIG 104.9 FM this Friday.
