Ironmen Show Bright Spots Ahead of Opener

The Nowata Ironmen prepare for a daunting stretch of three consecutive rivalry games to start the 2019 season. First up is Oklahoma Union on the road this Friday.

The Ironmen got a chance to get warmed up with a scrimmage against Pawhuska and Tulsa-Union JV last Friday. There were plenty of things to be encouraged by in the first on-field look at the team.

Of Course, senior Dillon Barnes was all over the field on defense. He is transitioning to outside linebacker in the new 3-4 defense look. Boys’ basketball Gary Hollingshead joined the staff this season and is the defensive coordinator.

Sophomore Emmett Sells made a great impression as well. Sells caught a touchdown pass and recorded an interception during the scrimmage.

Trenton Smith will start his first game at quarterback on Friday night. First-year head coach Chris Messner has full confidence that he is the right guy.

The Ironmen and Cougars square on Friday night at 7 p.m. Radio coverage will be on KRIG 104.9 FM starting at 6:30. We will have coverage from both team’s practices later this week.
