2019 represents an opportunity for Nowata football to turn its fate. The Ironmen played for a state title in 2015, but since then they have won just six games and been through four head coaches. Now, former Oklahoma Sooner captain Chris Messner steps into the head coach role and appears to have the program moving with a positive trajectory. Messner says the kids need to belief in themselves.

The Ironmen open the season at Oklahoma Union on August 30. Then the team plays two more rivals in the subsequent weeks with a home game against Dewey and a trip to Vinita. The Ironmen will then have their bye week three before opening up play in 2A district 4. Messner says the team needs to stay level during those high-tension games.

Nowata will continue practicing throughout the week before heading to Pawhuska for a scrimmage on Friday.
