Former University of Oklahoma Football head coach John Blake has died at the age of 59. Blake coached the Sooners from 1996-1998 and played nose guard for the Sooners from 1979-1982. His coaching record was 12-22 with the Sooners before Bob Stoops would come on the scene in 1999.

Blake was a native of Sand Springs and was recruited by Barry Switzer to come play for The University of Oklahoma.

Barry Switzer told the Tulsa World, “ He played for me and captained for me. He coached for me. I was close to John.”

Blake was also an admirable recruiter. He was responsible for bringing in more than half of the University of Oklahoma's 2000 national championship teams starters, including future NFL players such as safety Roy Williams and linebacker Rocky Calmus.

Blake served as The University of Oklahoma's 20th head football coach.
