Expectations Growing for OKU Football

As we continue our offseason look at area football programs we will look at one of the two area teams trying build off a playoff appearance from last season. Oklahoma Union turned around an 0-3 start to finish 5-5 while earning the school’s first playoff appearance since 2006. The Cougars were ousted by Morrison, 34-0. However, OKU did lay the foundation for the years to come.

Head coach Stephen Trammell is entering his second year as the Cougars head coach. He says external expectations have ramped up after a postseason appearance last year.

OKU saw weather interrupt a large part of its spring practice session, like most schools around the area. The Cougars totaled six practices before the rain overtook their natural playing surface. Most of those practices were spent installing some new looks on offense.Trammell says the team will focus on strength and conditioning into the summer. He says the team definitely has its eyes set on the opener against Nowata.

The Cougars will host Nowata on August 30. This will renew a cross-county rivalry that was not played in 2018 after OKU dropped down to Class-A.
