Eagles Split at Sterling
The Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball teams came away with a split on Wednesday night at Sterling College. The Lady Eagles fell to a nationally-ranked team while the men needed a second half surge to beat a bottom feeder.
The Lady Eagles lost 75-63. In the women's game a battle ensued in the first half. Both teams struggled to make shots early on. OKWU lead 12-10 after one quarter. Sterling would battle back to take a 29-27 lead at half. In the third quarter the Lady Warriors took off. Sterling went on separate 10-0 and 10-2 runs to put itself up by double-figures.
OKWU wouldn't be able to come back in the final period. Freshman Cierra Johnson tallied a career-high 14 points on four three-pointers. OKWU falls to 12-9 overall and 8-9 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The men's team trailed at halftime but ultimately pulled away from Sterling in a 90-73 win. The Warriors shot the lights out from distance in the first half. OKWU had an answer after trailing 42-41 at half. Kaleb Stokes hit four three-pointers in the first four minutes of the second half.
The Eagles gradually pulled away before a 16-6 run sank Sterling. OKWU was led by Brooks Haddock with 19 points. Lance Tipton and Valentin Van Putten each had double-doubles on the night. The Eagles are now 18-5 overall and 13-4 in KCAC play. Wesleyan jumps into a tie for first place after Ottawa lost.
