Doggers Looking to Keep Hooper Trophy

We’re on the eves of the best rivalry game in Green Country with Dewey and Nowata squaring off in the second annual ‘Battle for the Adam Hooper Trophy’ on Friday.

For the Doggers it will be chance to reset after getting trounced by Adair 60-0 in last Friday. Dewey struggled in all three phases at times in the zero week contest. However, a matchup with a young Ironmen club should make for better competition.

Dewey head coach Tyler Caid says few games on the Doggers schedule mean more than this one.

The wooden plaque hangs prominently outside of the Dewey coach’s office.

To keep the trophy Dewey must find more proficiency moving the ball on offense. The ground attack was a prominent factor in last year’s meeting as Dewey used its 389 rushing yards to steamroll Nowata, 63-0. Senior tailback Cole Brown was stifled by the Adair defense last week, totaling just 47 yards on 16 carries. However, more running lanes should be available against an undersized defensive front for the Ironmen.

Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 p.m. on KRIG 104.9 FM. We’ll continue our preview of the area’s best rivalry tomorrow with a look at keys to the game for both sides.
