Both Bartlesville High basketball teams took on Bixby in another split night at Bruin Field House on Tuesday night.

The Lady Bruins fell to the No. 4 Bixby girls, 65-39. Meanwhile the Bruin guys won it at buzzer, beating the Spartans 72-70.

The BHS girls fell behind early and could not catch back up against a state-title contender in Bixby. Spartans opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Bartlesville cut a 17-point lead down to 11 on back-to-back threes from Kate Gronigan and KK Duncan, but could get no closer.

On the guy’s side it was again close throughout. Tied in the final seconds, the sophomore David Castillo came up with perhaps his biggest play yet.

A driving layup at the buzzer that gave Bartlesville a two-point win.

It looked like Bartlesville had the game locked up down the stretch. BHS had four free-throws and a possession up by six points with a minute and a half left.

However the Bruins would miss the foul shots, and come up empty on three straight trips, and Bixby would improbably tie it with 19.5 seconds remaining – setting up the Castillo winner.

A six-point Bruin halftime lead turned into a five-point deficit quickly in the third quarter, but the Bruins came fighting back.

This layup from Aadi Ayyappan gave the Bruins the lead back.

Kent Girard led the Bruins with a career high of 22. Castillo finished with 19. Bartlesville has won three in a row on the guy’s side, they are 7-4. Lady Bruins are 3-9.

Both clubs head to Carl Albert for tournament play this weekend.
