Bruin Golf At Union

Bartlesville showed a little rust in the Bruins boy’s golf tournament in Tulsa on Monday.

BHS placed 17 out of 19 teams in the tournament hosted by Union. Bartlesville had a week off between competitions. BHS head coach Jeff Rude was a bit disappointed in the play, but says he is happy the guys bounced back at the end.

Bartlesville shot 374 as a team in the first round, then 359 in the second round.

The short game is the biggest bugaboo for Bartlesville. Rude says that it isn’t about how long you can hit it. BHS struggles on shots within 100 yards. Putting is included in that category. The Bruins had too many three-puts as well. Rude says it is all about repetition and practice.

Experience in tournament play will help, too.

Bartlesville is fairly young, outside of senior Andrew Lehman. Lehman wasn’t impervious to first-round struggles either. He shot an 81 then 74 in his two rounds. That was good for 15th overall.

Rude says that Lehman is the most consistent golfer he has coached. He is almost always in the low 80s to mid 70s.

Lehman qualified for state as a sophomore and a senior, and Rude expects that he will again this season. If Lehman gets hot, the sky’s the limit.

The state tournament is May 11-12 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater. Lehman will have the chance to qualify for state during regional play at Bailey Ranch in Owasso on May 4.
