Today we continue our look back at the top stories in local sports in 2020. Oklahoma Union once again put two basketball teams in the area tournament. Although both teams finished short of state it was still a wildly successful season for the Cougars.

The boy’s team spent a long stint as the No. 1 team is Class 2A. The Cougars claimed the top ranking in late January and held until their eventual elimination. Head coach Lee Ott talked about what the No. 1 ranking meant.

The Cougars were 14-0 at one point in the season. A high point for OKU was a 54-point victory over 5A McAlester during the Fort Gibson Tournament. The Cougars also won the Ty Hewitt Memorial Tournament in Nowata.

OKU would eventually lose the regionals finals to Hooker and then would be eliminated on an upset loss to Latta in the first game of the area tournament. The Lady Cougars would advance to the area finals before dropping two straight games. Both teams combined for a 47-6 record in 2019-20.

This season both teams find themselves in the top 10 of the Class 2A rankings at winter break.
