Bartlesville Swimming in Conference Championships

Bartlesville's boys and girl's swimming teams are both off to great starts and will get tested on Tuesday at Jenks, in the Frontier Valley Conference Meet. The BHS girls are ranked no. 5 in the state, with the boys ranked no. 4 in the state.

That isn't too shabby for two teams with a lot of young faces.Bruin head coach Chad Englehart says that he thinks those teams can end the season higher than that in the rankings.

The bigger challenge for Bartlesville later on will come from the west. Edmond North, Edmond Memorial and Norman North are the top three teams on each the boys and the girls side. Jenks and Bartlesville are fighting for the eastern supremacy in Oklahoma. Englehart says he thinks his team can compete with the teams from the west, but it is a matter of depth. Bartlesville has about 10 swimmers on each team. Others will have close to 30.

That puts the Bruins at a disadvantage. More swimmers means more chances to get points. Englehart explains the scoring. This all boils down to one point; Bartlesville has to take advantage of the swimmers it has in each event, otherwise bigger teams will swim away with the meet.

Kyle Ward and Aaron Stanek are both returning state champions for the BHS boys. The Bruins came in 2nd as a team last year at state. Help will come from seniors Mason McCauley and Thomas Downey, along with Peyton Stambeck and Leon Faulk.

Only two girls return for BHS from last year, Haley Downey and Avery Bennett both expect to be big scorers for the Lady Bruins.

How Bartlesville does on Tuesday will go a long way in showing where the Bruins are against the best competition in the state. No matter what the result, Englehart says the goal has been the same all along.
