Bartlesville Swim Teams Eye Regionals

The Bartlesville boys and girls swim teams won big over Oologah on Tuesday in Bartlesville on senior night, completing the regular season for the Bruins and Lady Bruins. Bixby was supposed to come and compete as well, but a last second change left the meet with just BHS and the Mustangs. The Bartlesville boys team won 106-42, the girls won 114-31. BHS swim coach Chad Englehart says both teams preformed well.

The Bartlesville swim teams have had to overcome a bit of the flu and sickness that has infiltrated Northeast Oklahoma. Both teams are pretty low on numbers to begin with, so getting all the boys and girls healthy is key. Englehart says everyone is almost back to 100 percent. That is good timing for BHS, as regionals are coming up on Feb. 6.

The illnesses to some of the girls probably affected the Lady Bruin's outcome at the Fronteir Conference meet a couple of weeks ago. Englehart says he likes the way his ladies have responded, and that they are coming back strong. Englehart has especially been impressed with returning state runner-up Haley Downey on the girls side.

The main powerhouses in 6A swimming reside on the western part of the state. Edmond North, Edmond Memorial and Norman North are the only three teams ranked ahead of BHS on the boys side, as the Bruins are no. 4 in the state. The girls are no. 5, behind the previously mentioned three teams, and Jenks.

Englehart says that low numbers on the teams are still an issue, and that Bartlesville will still be tested greatly at regionals

The teams from the west wait in the wings until state, but BHS has a more immediate foe to worry about, Jenks. The Trojans gave the Bruins fits in the Frontier conference meet. Englehart says his club has a lot of respect for its rivals down south.

Regionals are at Jenks, and going into Feb. 6 Englehart wants his boys and girls rested and ready to go for the test ahead. The teams will cut back a bit on practice but will still be working and preparing.
