Bartlesville Splits With Sapulpa

With both basketball teams coming off wins over Bixby on Friday, Bartlesville forced a split with Sapulpa on Tuesday evening at Bruin Fieldhouse.

First the Bartlesville girls fell to the Lady Chieftains 61-47. The 14-point final scores makes the game look more out of reach than it actually was.

Bartlesville cut the Sapulpa lead to five on two different occasions, but the Lady Bruins were unable to get it any closer. BHS trailed 28-23 at halftime, and a quick run to start the third quarter put the Sapulpa girls ahead by 14, their biggest lead of the game.

BHS wouldn't go quietly, a 6-0 run from Hailey Tucker cut the lead from 12 down to six about midway through the fourth quarter. Bartlesville bounced between a six and nine point deficit for the majority of the final quarter, getting as close as five with 2:36 remaining in the game.

Turnovers and Sapula's free-throw shooting put the Lady Bruins away. A 4-0 run from the Lady Chieftains put them back up by nine, and it was all downhill from there.

Tucker finished the game with 20 points, and freshman Vivian Culver added 14 off the bench, including a three-pointer in the final couple of minutes that gave BHS some more hope.

On the boy's side things were much more touch and go. Bartlesville actually trailed for much of the second half, but the Bruin's came back to win 56-47.

As usual, BHS can thank Antonio Castillo, who had 27 points, on 16-16 free-throw shooting on the evening. The senior is now shooting 66-75 from the charity stripe this season.

This game for BHS didn't follow the usual blueprint against Sapulpa as it did for it's games over the past month. Bartlesville was good offensively from the get-go, but struggled on the defensive side. Post presence and size down low for Sapulpa caused the Bartlesville defense some problems. Dae Williams scored at will for the Chieftains on the drive and in the paint.

Coach Clent Stewart dialed up the pressure in the second half. A switch to zone in the final minutes of the game put the game away, in conjunction with free-throws from Castillo.

AJ Parker continued his hot-shooting with another three-pointer. AJ Archambo also hit a big three in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter for some separation.

Both Bartlesville teams next play on Thursday evening for day one of the Carl Albert Titan Classic. BHS is guaranteed three games in three days for the girls and boys. The girls open with Putnam City at 5:30 on Thursday, the boys will be directly after at 7:00. You can hear both those games on KWON 1400 AM, 93.3 FM.

Here is a bracket for the tournament.
