Bartlesville Indians - Glen Winget Champions

For the first time in 13 years the Doenges Ford Indians won their own marquee event.

Bartlesville rallied to defeat Fort Smith 7-6 on Monday evening at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium to win the Glen Winget Tournament for the first time since 2003.

The Indians scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the come from behind victory. The biggest hit came from tourney MVP Logan McNeill, who lined a ball in front of the Sportsman right fielder to score two runs and give B-Ville the lead for good.

The sixth frame was ridiculously wild. Bartlesville had the bases loaded with one out when Zach Snow was thrown out trying to steal home. The resulting collision with the Fort Smith catcher caused the benches to clear, and tempers to flare for a few minutes.

After the hubbub the Indians had runners on first and second with two outs. Fort Smith committed two huge errors that let Bartlesville (19-9) right back in the contest. Ground balls from Brady Sewell and Sam Walker resulted in errors on the Fort Smith short stop and the second basemen. It also led to two Indian runs. Bartlesville was down by one, and had set the stage for the McNeill go-ahead single.

Corey Murphy earned the win on the mound. Murphy threw a scoreless two and two thirds innings in relief of the Indian’s starter Joe Jones. Murphy struck out three, walked none, and gave up two hits in that span.

FINAL OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT

Jones had a solid outing. He allowed only two earned runs over his four and a third innings of work. He picked up a no decision.

Defensive woes plagued Bartlesville. The Indians committed five errors, which led to four unearned Sportsman runs. The Indians had the lead early, 3-2, until Fort Smith scored four unanswered runs - two in the fourth and two in the fifth.

The Indians are off until Thursday when Bartlesville will play a double-header at Fort Smith – unrelated to the tournament. The Sportsman were undefeated going into the game. They drop to 24-1 on the season.

McNeill, Murphy, Joe Gott and Sam Walker were named to the all tournament team. McNeill got the MVP award after going 7-12 at the plate with five RBIs and five runs scored in the Indian’s four wins.

And don’t forget about that game-winning single.
