Bartlesville Basketball Continues to Work

After two regular season double-headers, and a boys tournament, the BHS basketball season is finally in full swing, only to have another lull as the squads take a brief break for the holidays.

The Lady Bruins will have some work, as BHS is hosting the Oakley Lady Bruin Holliday Classic on Monday Dec. 29-31 at Bruin Fieldhouse. We got a chance to talk with girls head coach Terry Rodgers and boys skipper Clent Stewart about the season so far, and the team's plans for the break.

The BHS girls (1-1) picked up their first win at Union, 47-44, on Friday Dec. 19, and it was only the ladies second game of the season. Rodgers says after practicing since Oct. 1, the win was a long time coming.

The difference between the loss to Broken Arrow, and the win over Union was pretty simple, according to Rodgers.

Just a couple games into the year, junoir transfer guard/forward Lauryn Washington has been a great addition into the starting lineup, Rodgers says Washington is just starting to realize her potential.

Other newcomers were instrumental during the Lady Bruin's win against Union. Rodgers points out Ronni Gillard, who got a key and-one, and scored five points.

Bartlesville take on Tulsa Central first in the tournament on Monday, and Rodgers says he knows these teams will test BHS just the same as the first two games.

Meanwhile on the guy's side, Bartlesville (3-2) lost to Union for just the first time in a while on Friday 55-47. The defending State Champions ended a three-game winning streak for BHS. Stewart says his team spotted Union too big of a lead to start.

Bartlesville trailed by as many as 16 in the third quarter, but a comeback, spurred by Antonio Castillo got BHS to within five late in the game. Stewart was pleased with the team's resolve.

Bartlesville point guard and senior leader Castillo has been as good as ever so far this season, scoring 19 points per game on the young season.Stewart talks about Castillo's ability to take over a game.

The Bruin's are off until Jan. 6 when BHS hosts Owasso, so no tournament games for the guys. Stewart runs down the team's plan for the holidays
