2018 Look Back: Bruin Football Moves Forward

It is 2019, and Tuesday will be our final look back at the 2018 calendar year in the area, as we prepare for the next year in sports across Bartlesville.

Today will focus on the roller coaster 2018 that was Bruin football, as Bartlesville’s program took major steps forward, nearly made the playoffs, but also had two coaches in the past 12 months.

The Bruins brought in the Lee Blankenship era with high hopes delivered both on the field, and off. BHS had nearly 90 guys out for the team in 2018, up about 35 or so from years past.

Bartlesville won four games and was a touchdown drive against Sapulpa away from making the playoffs.

One of the many highlights on the year was the stellar play of Bruin running back DeAndre Young. Young rushed for 1,937 yards in basically eight games. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry and notched a single-season rushing record in BHS history. This touchdown from Young in the fourth quarter of his final game against Shawnee put the finishing touches on a Bartlesville win.

Young has picked up some interest from NCAA Division II schools, and many have him pegged as a possible D-I tailback at the FCS level. The Bruins will return about 18 players with starting experience next season, including quarterback Ben Winters, and two of their top three wide receivers.

Bartlesville will be under a new skipper, as Jason Sport will take the helm. The Bruin defensive coordinator was pegged as the head coach just a matter of weeks ago after Blankenship took the head job at Mustang High School. Sport talks about the state of Bruin football.

You can hear a full year in review on Tuesday at 10:00 AM on KWON – AM 1400 and FM 93.3 as we rundown the best news and sports stories of the year and look ahead to 2019.
