2016-17 Football District Changes

There are a few, albeit small, changes for the 2016-17 Oklahoma high school football districts.

The Oklahoma Coaches Association announced its proposals for changes in districts during their annual meeting at the Coaches Convention on Thursday. The changes are unofficial until they are voted on by the OSSAA at its September 9 board meeting.

For Bartlesville High; the Bruins would stay in 6A-II on the eastern district. However, there is one difference to BHS' proposed district. Ponca City is proposed to head to the western district. The Wildcats would play the likes of Choctaw, Midwest City, Putnam City and Stillwater.

Meanwhile, U.S. Grant, who has competed in the OSSAA championship despite not playing a district regular season schedule, would replace Ponca. This could possibly take a district game away from the Bruins in 2016-17, and leave an open week on the schedule. That possibility was discussed by Bartlesville Athletic Director Tim Bart on this week's edition (7/31) of Bruin Buzz

The district would look like this: Bartlesville, Bixby, Booker T., Claremore, U.S. Grant, Muskogee, Sapulpa and Sand Springs.

Here is how the other local high schools shook out.

Dewey will continue in 3A district 5. The Bulldoggers will be with Berryhill, Sperry, Verdigris, Claremore Sequoyah and Webster.

Nowata will continue in 2A district 7. The Ironmen will be with Adair, Caney Valley, Chelsea, Commerce, Oklahoma Union and Wyandotte.

The main change to the area will be Pawhuska, the Huskies will compete in 2A district 1, which is based largely on the western half of the state. The Huskies would play Alva, Chisholm, Hennessey, Tonkowa, Newkirk and Perry.
