On Thursday the Osage Nation Prevention Programs sent a press release out to encourage parents and caregivers to consider the following tips to ensure the safety of their teens and others as they take part in common May High School events, such as prom and graduation.

Osage Nation Prevention Programs advises that parents and caregivers to:

  • Set appropriate limits and expectations.
  • Be clear about the consequences associated with drug- and alcohol-use that they may incur at home or at school, and with law enforcement.
  • Be a parent, not a friend, and ask unpopular questions: Where are you going? Who will be there? What will you be doing?
  • Make a plan with your teen about how they will get to the dance and later back home.
  • Meet your teen’s prom date and/or friends.
  • Stress to teens to not be distracted if they are the driver or just a passengers in the car. Use seat belts and put cell phones away.
  • And if your teen becomes distrustful about riding with friend(s) for any reason, urge him or her to ask to get out and call a parent/caregiver.

The Osage Nation Prevention Programs adds that parents can provide alternatives to prom and/or graduation after-parties by hosting a drug-free and alcohol-free party or activity.

The Osage Nation Prevention Programs also encourages parents or caregivers to stay up until prom-goers’ return.
