State Representative Says There is a Possibility of a Wage Increase for Teachers
Diane Coston
Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister gave a report earlier this week on her first 100 days in office. One of the first things she proposed in January was Okhigh5, a plan that would add five days of instruction to the school year and provide a $5-thousand across the board teacher pay increase over a five year period. Despite a $611-million budget deficit, State Representative Earl Sears said that a raise is still possible.
Oklahoma is behind neighboring states in teacher pay, which has contributed to a historic shortage of teachers with about 1000 classroom positions were vacant during the school year.
