Washington County Grass Fire
A large grassfire near Ochelata burned nearly 2000 acres Monday. Washington County Emergency Manager Kary Cox says that early indications show that a sparking electric line was the cause of the fire. At least ten fire departments were involved in fighting the fire including Washington County, Barnsdall, Osage Hills, Ochelata, Oglesby, Ramona, Skiatook, Avant and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The initial call for the fire came in around ten o'clock in the morning Monday and by four thirty, Cox was able to say the fire was 99% contained.With the dry windy weather continuing, Cox cautions against outdoor burning.Cox says that although two trucks were damaged while fighting the fire there were no injuries. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows a significant chance for fires Tuesday and an elevated risk through Friday.
