Grass Fires Shuts Down Highway 60
A large grass fire east of Nowata shut down part of Highway 60 Thursday afternoon. The fire was first reported at about 9 Thursday morning. The fire was located around county road 4330 in Craig County and burned for about 6 hours before it was brought under control. According to Vinita Fire Chief Kevin Wofford, only one building was damaged by the fire. Wofford said that the biggest difficulty in fighting this fire was the wind and the potential it had for injuring firefighters. Fortunatly there were no injuries due to the fire and Wofford is very grateful for the more than 20 departments that came to assist with the fire. Melissa Pitner from Washington County Emergency Management reminds you to be aware of the high fire danger and has some advice regarding fire safety. The Washington County Fire Department has already responded to thirteen grass fires this year.
