A portion of Sunset Boulevard will be closed beginning Monday to facilitate temporary repairs to the bridge over Butler Creek.

Sunset Boulevard will be closed completely to through traffic between Park View Drive and Will Rogers Drive for the duration of the project. Work is expected to take approximately one week to complete. Traffic will be detoured to Virginia Avenue during this period.

City Director of Engineering Micah Siemers said the repairs are necessary due to a hole that developed in the southbound lane of the bridge deck last summer.

“City crews placed a large steel plate over the hole as a temporary solution until a plan could be developed and a contractor selected to complete the repair,” Siemers said. “The repairs next week will also be temporary in nature as funds have been approved to completely rehabilitate the bridge as part of the recent General Obligation Bond election that was passed in August.”

The full bridge rehabilitation will be completed once G.O. Bond funding for the project becomes available, which isn’t likely to be until next fall at the earliest.
