An agreement for law enforcement services by and between the Town of Copan, Washington County Commissioners, and the Washington County Sheriff's Office was approved on Monday morning.

Sheriff Scott Owen said this was a renewal with Copan where the Sheriff's Office provides supplemental patrol services to the town. He said everyone is happy with the agreement, it is economically feasible for all involved, and it provides off-duty employment for the Sheriff's Office deputies.

The biggest deal for the agreement to fall into place was animal control. Sheriff Owen added that the Town of Copan opted not to pursue a lot of municipal enforcement, especially in the area of traffic because their prior police department created some community disapproval.

The Town of Copan believed that it was in their best interest, and the interest of Washington County's deputies, to run any traffic charges through the District Court. If there are animal control issues, the Washington County Sheriff's Office would handle it before the Town of Copan's animal control officer that is on-duty would follow up on the matter the next day, if not the next week.

It was also noted that plenty of foot traffic had been cut down in Copan. Sheriff Owen said Bartlesville's Street Crimes Task Force led in conjunction with the District Attorney's Office shut down some narcotic issues in the area.
