Washington County Emergency Manager Kerry Cox says this year's fire season is going to be a little different. While it has been a wetter winter season compared to years past, some people may think that fire dangers will be at a minimum.

Cox says that isn't always the case though. Dormant grasses and dead fuels do not absorb mositure as well and they dry out a lot quicker. He says heavy "fuel loads" still exists out there. The fire potential is still there, but this year they will probably be fighting more fires in the mud, Cox says.

Cox cautions people to be aware of those dead fuels that dry quickly. He adds that there are procedures in place if you want to start a controlled fire. State statute requires that if you are going to do a prescribed burn or controlled burn on your property, you have to notify your local fire department.

He says you also have to have a written burn plan. While burning, you have to have the means and the ability to control the fire.
