Undersheriff Mark Kirschner presented an idea that could save the jail money at Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Nowata County Commissioners. Kirchsner said he has been looking into a program that would allow for the release of several inmates to a house arrest program.

Commissioner Troy Friddle was leery of the idea due to potential risks that could cost the county. Kirschner says any helpful ideas need to be entertained with the current state of the jail.

Kirschner would go on to say that in his experience risk is very minimal with programs like these. Also in the meeting, the commissioners continued the discussion on an item regarding updates to the county handbook. The commissioners had previously asked for updates from officials in all county offices.

Several officials said they had already met to discuss any differing ideas. However, Chairman Doug Sonenberg said he wanted officials to continuing discussing these items before submitting a proposal to board.

The board also accepted rock bids from seven different companies. Those bids will be awarded at next Monday’s meeting.
