Two Nowata County deputies will receive the Medal of Valor on Thursday.  Sheriff Rick Miller says Deputy Jeff Grissom and Major William Tate received word on May 28th of last year of a pursuit northbound on U. S. 169 in Rogers County involving a black Tahoe followed by an Oologah and Talala officer.  Dispatcher Thomas Kerr told the officers that shots were being fired at the pursuing officers from the rear of the Tahoe.

The pursuit entered Nowata County.  By that time several other agencies were involved in the pursuit, including Oologah, Talala, Nowata City Police Department, Oklahoma Wildlife Department, and South Coffeyville police in addition to Grissom and Tate.

The chase continued north through the City of Nowata.  Just south of Nowata County Road 9, a bullet fired from the back of the Tahoe hit the Oologah police officer and led to a violent crash of his vehicle.  The Talala and Nowata City Police officers stopped to render aid.  Deputy Grissom and Major Tate continued the pursuit.  A bullet fired from the Tahoe struck the windshield of Grissom's patrol car.  Thanks to the sacrifice of their personal safety, South Coffeyville officer Jason McClain and Reserve officer, Roger Carroll were able to deploy stop sticks and eventually bring the occupants of the vehicle to justice.

Grissom and Tate will receive the award in Norman Thursday night as part of the Oklahoma Sheriff's Association Annual Awards Banquet.
