Scam Hits Dewey Homeowners for $25k

A hacked email started a chain of events that has cost a Dewey family who thought they were buying a home thousands of dollars.  The family paid 25 thousand dollars cash for the house and paid the sum online using instructions from an email they thought were from their realtor.

Their title company, Oklahoma REO, informed them a few days after they moved in that the seller never received the money.  The funds ended up in the hands of scammers in Malaysia.

According to a Chinowth & Cohen spokesperson, the realty company is not at fault.  They admit it was their company's agent whose email was intercepted.

The purchasers say they double-checked with the realtor before following the emailed instructions, but none of the companies or banks working with the family are taking responsibility for the lost payment.

The News on 6 quotes the owner of the title company, Scott Coulson as saying he is working with Chinowth & Cohen to try to get the 25 thousand dollar payment back.  In the mean time, the bank that now owns the home is threatening to charge the occupants a fee to extend the contract for non-payment.
